Sponsored by The University of Central Lancashire, this award is given to a Secondary School that has excelled in school sport and physical activity over the last 12 months. Community links and the impact of sport has made them stand out over the year.
The Secondary School of the Year 2018 was Sir John Thursby Community College.
Sir John Thursby have been working with The Youth Sports Trust to increase the amount of physical activity staff and students receive, focussing both on physical and mental health. They have developed ‘My Personal Best’ in PE and as a whole school to instil the values of resilience, organisation and communication into every subject. They have also incorporated ‘No Seat Fridays’ and Zumbathons into the events planner and work closely with other primary schools on a range of other events. They have a team of Football Activators who promote, plan and deliver football sessions to their KS3 peers. A group of students worked with an Olympic athlete who mentored them to prepare for revision if they had low confidence. A bid was made to The Eric Wright Trust in December 2017 to take 32 students from a socially deprived area to a Water Park Adventure Centre in February 2018 to participate in outdoor and adventurous activities.
